E. Nesbit’s classic transported to 1960s Peterborough
Playwright Julie Mayhew has taken Edith Nesbit’s famous story and transported the much-loved characters to 1960s Peterborough and the last days of steam.
When their father is wrongly imprisoned, siblings Bobbie, Phyllis and Peter leave London and “play at being poor for a bit”. In this nostalgic adaptation, the children recount their days as ‘Railway Children’ absorbed into the lives of the characters at Peterborough East station.
Set in the wake of Dr Beeching’s railway cuts, and against a backdrop of Beatlemania, Beatnik poetry and Cold War secrecy, The (Fletton) Railway Children explores loss of innocence, teenage rebellion and the feeling of belonging to a time of cultural change and new beginnings.
