Margaret Catchpole

Wed 13 Sep 2000 - Sat 18 Nov 2000

It was the ride of her life....and she rode into legend.

The night Margaret Catchpole stole the brewer Cobbold's horse, she rode into legend.

Was it fate or ill fortune that saw the Suffolk girl torn forever from her smuggler sweetheart Will Laud? History records the bare facts: her solitary ride in disguise from Ipswich to London, her capture and daring escape from jail, her recapture and transportation to Australia.

This new play delves further into the chaotic world of the eighteenth century to ask what passions drove this extraordinary woman to risk everything, to shake herself free from society's noose, to set out on the ride of her life.
