Brierley's Reminiscence Workshop
13 August 2013Do you remember shopping at Brierley's?
Or do you have memories of the man himself, Frank Brierley, 'The Pirate King'?
"Stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap"
If you shopped at Brierley's, the revolutionary Peterborough supermarket, then Eastern Angles Theatre Company wants to hear from you!
Frank Brierley started out as a wise-cracking grocer with the gift of the gab but, after bringing US-style checkouts and moving conveyor belts to his Peterborough store, he soon found himself heading-up a multi-million pound empire.
Supermarket shoppers saw goods piled high and sold at rock bottom prices. And, as customers wandered around, Brierley would announce special offers over the tannoy using his legendary sales banter.
Now, Eastern Angles are inviting people who recall Brierley, the extraordinary entrepreneur who formed such an important part of Peterborough's rich cultural history, and his ground breaking store to come and share their memories over tea and cake.
This free event will take place on Saturday 31 August. There will be two 'reminiscence sessions', one from 11.00-13.00 and another from 14.00-16.00 in the L P Hartley Room, Central Library, Peterborough. The memory-sharing event is being run as part of a series of workshops to research a fascinating new community play, River Lane by Tony Ramsay, which will be performed in Peterborough in 2014 as part of the Forty Years On Project.
Playwright Tony Ramsay said; "Frank Brierley really was an extraordinarily colourful character - a classic barrow boy made good. Everyone in Peterborough knew his shop. There are so many fantastic stories to be told about his antics, we can't wait hear what people have to tell us!"
Eastern Angles are keen to hear from anyone who has a story to tell about this remarkable shop or the man who ran it.
