Creating the Legend of Hampton

14 February 2017

You may have heard the tales of the Fen Tigers that once roamed the flatlands to the east of Peterborough; you might know of the legend of Robin Goodfellow; you may even have seen a giant black dog running through the peat fields in pitch black; but you probably haven't ever heard of a folk tale from Hampton. Well, now all that's about to change…

We're delighted to announce that we have received a grant from the Arts Council Creative People and Places fund and will be collaborating with arts organisation Peterborough Presents for a magical project for residents of Hampton, Peterborough. This great project will take place between April and September 2017 and is suitable for families of all ages to get involved in creating Hampton’s very own legend!

The project will feature a series of creative workshops with the Hampton community involving puppetry, monster-building, story creation, booklet illustration, storytelling, music and video. Workshops will explore the landscape of Hampton and create a colourful folklore for a place that was a series of brick pits until 1997. In a final weekend of presentations at Hampton’s own new venue, The Undercroft, the whole community will come together to celebrate its achievement.

Ivan Cutting, Artistic Director of Eastern Angles, said,

“We’re interested in using traditional means of telling stories, through music, poetry and oral storytelling, and using them in modern ways. This might include a rock song, puppetry, spoken word, theatre, video and digital technology, dance and interactive installations to tell a story. These will be spread across a wide age range so there is something for everyone: story circles for infants, puppetry/storyboard making for Primary students, theatre and writing for Secondary students, walks and discussions for adults and reminiscence sessions for older residents.”

The programme will run in partnership with vibrant theatre company Lamphouse Theatre, who are also based in the city. A full programme of activity will be detailed on our website soon. Watch this space...
