13 July 2021Eastern Angles is the touring theatre company for the East of England, producing over 120 shows with a sense of place in its nearly 40 year history. Principally based in Ipswich at The Eastern Angles Centre, with a satellite venue, The Undercroft, in Peterborough, it takes work to over sixty different venues each year. You can help us tour theatre that pushes the boundaries of both arts and heritage.
We mix rural touring into village halls with national tours and visits to the Edinburgh and London fringe; site-specific work, community plays and urban engagement in Peterborough all form part of our repertoire; care homes, schools, tithe barns and aircraft hangars feature amongst our venues.
The Arts Council is now launching a new strategy Let’s Create, recalibrating its investment principles and focus. Cultural organisations have been challenged in how they present their work and interact with communities, and this will continue to be a major preoccupation over the next few years.
This is especially exciting as a touring company and we see it as an opportunity to reach out, diversify and develop new relationships with audiences, communities, and creators across the region. However, we are also extending its reach and profile in the local community of West Ipswich with the development of the Eastern Angles Centre. This 14-room old school with theatre is an arts and heritage hub that will stimulate creativity in people of all ages and classes, and build more meaningful engagement with new audiences.
‘The East of England would be a far poorer place theatrically without the indispensable Eastern Angles.’
Lyn Gardner, The Stage
Additionally, our work in Peterborough includes supporting young people to develop their talent though workshops and masterclasses, enabling them to think of the arts as a possible career. We run writing groups and online courses, and would like to get more creatives involved in these projects (although the pandemic has stymied this).
This is quite possibly the most exciting chapter in the company’s existence. Covid-19 has had a huge impact on how we all live and work, but Eastern Angles’ sustainability has proved resilient.
We know many people aren’t sure what being on a board of trustees means or what the requirements are – so if you haven’t been on a board before, please don’t let that put you off. This brief introduction should give you more information about what’s involved, and what we’re looking for, but if you’ve got other questions please get in touch.
