Reviews & Comments on POLSTEAD so far...

17 July 2018

We kicked off POLSTEAD last week at Ipswich Waterfront and had a fantastic time with sell-out audiences packing into our pop-up theatre tent by Cult Cafe...

We continue the tour to The Undercroft in Peterborough, a real tithe barn near Polstead itself at Semer and Debach Airfield.

Here are some of the wonderful comments we've received on social media and reviews so far...

Well worth catching on its tour

LIBBY PURVES, THEATRE CAT

This is a tale of a real place and time far more than just another one of violent death and retribution.

FOUR COUNTIES THEATRE

An amazing piece of theatre that carries you along with twist and turns a plenty...With a clever set design, fabulous lighting and music and brilliant costumes, this is one piece of theatre that will really move you.

IPSWICH24 MAGAZINE

This has to be not only one of the best theatre experiences of the year but one of the best shows that Eastern Angles has ever staged.

EAST ANGLIAN DAILY TIMES

Eastern Angles at their best - an old story with contemporary resonance, narrative and music rooted in the region but universally powerful. Beth Flintoff's marvellous piece, brought thrillingly to life by six young women, reclaims Maria Marten's legend from the myth and the melodrama.

MICHAEL GRAY

As well as our official reviews, we had a work experience student from Kesgrave High School join us last week. Anna added her own review of the show:

I had the fortune to see this amazing play, by Beth Flintoff and the amazing Eastern Angles team. The show consisted of the retelling of the story of Maria Marten of the Red Barn Murder from 1820s Polstead. In this retelling of the story Beth Flintoff takes the approach in which Maria Marten (Elizabeth Crarer) tells the story of not only her death, the murderer, but her life. The piece has a beautiful mix of the happiness and the pain of the girl’s life, and her family and her friend’s lives. The Eastern Angles team and the cast of POLSTEAD bring to life the story of Maria Marten and the friends which surrounded her life. Beth Flintoff has created a heart touching play of pain, joy and heartbreak, the stories of domestic abuse modern day women deal with brought out of the dark. This play really sparks feminism, and soon it becomes a roaring bonfire.
