River Lane hits the water
3 March 2014Tickets for River Lane, our latest community production for Peterborough, are now on sale from our Box Office.
Written by acclaimed Peterborough-raised playwright Tony Ramsay, this new production will be performed in the a mystery Peterborough location from 8th - 18th May.
Tony Ramsay, writer of Eastern Angles' hugely successful theatre production The Long Life & Great Good Fortune of John Clare, has used his own background to inspire this new play. Set in the city the story will take audiences back to the days of Frank Brierley's supermarket, Walter Cornelius and the Peterborough Birdmen, dancing at the Bull & Dolphin, hanging out at The Spinning Wheel and the day Desmond Dekker came to perform his chart-topping hits of the 1960s.
But at the heart of the play, is the area around River Lane.
"I grew up in Peterborough and at the age of 14, River Lane was the centre of my world", explains Tony. "Cooling water used to seep into the cut from under the power station, this warm water attracted fish. Day and night people came to fish from the narrow strip of land between the cut and the river".
"I remember hauling a tench out of water in the dark using a penny and a tin can as a bite detector. Once I fell into the river at three in the morning and had to cycle home in my soaked clothes. It was the sort of place that gave parents' nightmares!"
