Somewhere in England: 1 Week to Opening Night

4 March 2016

It feels like we have come so far from the first read through three weeks ago. The set is up, the actors are trying on costumes and the narrative is moving along nicely. Gari, the director, and the actors have spent the last two weeks meticulously going through the script, getting it on its feet and trying various options. The world of WWII, East Anglia and the American airforce is gradually coming to life.

I have also been given the task of designing the sound for the production. I'm enjoying this immensely due to the wonderful music around at the time, from Glenn Miller and Vera Lynn to swing bands and the influence of American jazz in Britain. Also, the play takes us to airfields, the countryside, to pubs and balls, and the sourcing of the soundscapes has been very rewarding.

As I type, the actors are going through lines, taking notes in their script and getting ready to do another ‘stagger-through', a run of the play where we go over things if they haven't worked or need tweaking.

Next week we'll be in Stowmarket to rehearse and present our first performance! Don't miss us on the road. It's gunna be a good'n!
