The Gatacre Centre Fundraiser with Charlie Haylock

The Gatacre Centre Fundraiser with Charlie Haylock

We’re delighted that Arts Council England have invited us to submit an application to their Capital Fund towards our ambition to takeover the old Suffolk Record Office  buildings adjacent to the Sir John Mills Theatre.  The whole of the old school will be called The Gatacre Centre.

This exciting development, which will encompass extra activity space, work with our local community & a business hub to increase our sustainability, could be up and running in a year’s time if we can raise £50,000 towards our total project cost of £200,000. And YOU can help us…

The Gatacre Centre Fundraiser with Charlie Haylock will help us reach our next £1000 milestone.

Join us for a drink & a chortle worthy evening around Suffolk stories and thick accents.

Charlie Haylock will give us an unbiased, eccentric look as to why the Suffolk dialect is the most important in the evolution of spoken English.

Discover how the seed of spoken English actually started in Suffolk and how the ancient Suffolk dialect has evolved at the same time. See how each invading force affected the English language and the different sounds they brought - resulting in hilarious confusion.

Charlie will entertain us with several Suffolk oddities, explaining their derivations and perhaps that we are not so odd after all.

He will demonstrate how Shakespearean Suffolk was really spoken - very different to the Standard English productions of today.

Charlie will demonstrate the different facial expressions and varying movements of the mouth of different English dialects, during his popular and much requested dialect tour of the British Isles and further afield . . . At the same showing how a deaf person he knew, when lip reading, could tell what dialect someone had.

This dialect tour will lead Charlie into explaining how Suffolk is the basis of the Australian dialect… and it's a lot more than just convicts! A lot more.

The evening will end with Charlie being informally interviewed by Eastern Angles Artistic Director Ivan Cutting and an audience Q&A.

Tickets are £20 including a free drink.

Friday 28th June, 7.45pm at Sir John Mills Theatre, Ipswich
